Agent Frameworks, Tools & Evals
Figma agent specs. Figma introduced a Markdown-based Specs editor and context integrations so third-party agents can follow a brand's design rules while creating, and made its canvas agent more widely available.
Practical agent evals. LangChain published a guide to agent evaluation: start with one behavior, build small datasets from real traces, use code evaluators where possible, LLM judges where not, and evaluate full threads and trajectories.
Context rot fix. LangChain's Deep Agents harness uses five middleware techniques to move context out of the active window into plain files, preventing accuracy drops in long-running agents and making memory portable across models.
OCR parser benchmark. Datalab released OmniParseBench, an open benchmark with 16,288 pass/fail tests across 2,937 pages to help engineers choose document parsers; Gemini 3.8 Flash leads slightly over Datalab's own parser.
Safe financial agents. OpenAI and Anthropic discussed balancing autonomy and safety in financial agents at AI Engineer NY, emphasizing that controls and human judgment placement matter more than restriction count.
Model Releases & Fine-tunes
LFM2.5 agent workhorse. A user swapped LFM2.5-24B into Pi Agent workflows and reports sustained ~95 tps on an AMD W7900, with reliable performance on mechanical and recursive tasks.
Qwen efficiency variants. Three separate releases—Sabi-Noema, Tessera-27B-CJK, and Telperion's MLA/GLA—compress reasoning tokens or KV cache to improve efficiency, with Sabi-Noema claiming gains on agent and tool-calling benchmarks.
- Sabi-Noema: A capability and efficiency focused fine-tune of Qwen 3.8 27B(opens in a new tab)
- Tessera-27B-B-CJK, Zellige AIs new finetune of Qwen with novel approaches to how we think about token savings(opens in a new tab)
- New model from Telperion: Qwen3.8-27B-MLA & Qwen3.8-27B-GLA-g2. 4x smaller KV cache, smarter, and more efficient reasoning.(opens in a new tab)
Multimodal on phones. MiniCPM-V 4.7 uses Lookahead Expert Scheduling to run a 35B MoE vision-language model on mobile devices with about 3GB of memory, plus a smaller 1B variant.
Compact MoE coming. NVIDIA Nemotron Bolt 3.5 is a 74B-parameter, 9B-active MoE model packed into 24GB using 2-bit quantization-aware training, launching Oct 15; a 4GB E4B variant follows Oct 23.
Coding MoE. JetBrains Mellum 2.1 12B A2.5B MoE runs at 60–140 tps on consumer GPUs and is capable for coding tasks, especially when paired with a larger planner model.
Local AI & Hardware
Chicken-coop shed rig. A user built a 256GB VRAM rig with four unlocked CMP 170HX cards and a Threadripper, moved it to a shed for heat and noise, and runs Qwen Flash Next and GLM 5.3 locally.
Business on local AI. Built three 4x Radeon R9700 boxes with cheap EPYCs for $10.7k each, totaling 384GB VRAM, to run AI for USA Arms after hosted models refused firearms-related work.
Fast Radiance engine. Deadcode's Radiance engine achieved 176 t/s decode and 6,450 t/s prefill with Q4 Qwen-3.8 Flash-Next on 2x R9700 and 64GB DDR5.
llama.cpp kernel speedup. A llama.cpp PR adds GDN chunked kernels, improving MoE prompt processing by up to 20.6% on RTX PRO 6000 and 17.9% on RTX 5090.
Research & Applied AI
AI chip design. Ricursive Intelligence says AI can design chips iteratively to improve efficiency, addressing 10,000x compute demand growth without building 10,000x more data centers.
No self-improving AI. Google DeepMind's Haydn Belfield says AI writes over 75% of production code but has not measurably accelerated AI research; human oversight remains essential for complex tasks.
Comments don't matter. A developer removed 168,000 lines of comments from a codebase and found an AI agent produced equally good code on both versions across three runs, questioning the value of comments.
AI mass decompilation. AI-powered decompilation is enabling game mashups and preservation but also threatens proprietary software, as discussed by indie developer Popcar.
AI-designed proteases. Researchers used AI protein design to replace non-catalytic parts of proteases, creating enzymes that cut specific proteins linked to neurological diseases.
AI weather forecasts. Ai2's HiRO-ACEv2 simulates extreme weather at 3km resolution for about 1/300th the cost of X-SHiELD, while Microsoft's ML tool corrects bias in 2–6 week forecasts, published in Nature.
Agents in Production
Undercover anti-scam agents. Apate deploys thousands of AI agents that pose as victims to waste scammers' time and gather bank accounts, wallets, and scam infrastructure; they have handled 2.5M conversations.
Autonomous sales research. Floqer is building AI agents that continuously collect and update customer knowledge for B2B sales, has surpassed $1.2M ARR, and plans to open-source the technology.
Conversational ordering. Square launched a $1,999 kiosk with an agentic voice layer that understands the menu and handles modifications and substitutions in real time.
Internet storm tracker. Gudea uses AI to analyze how stories spread across 500+ platforms and identify who is driving conversations before crises erupt, going beyond traditional social listening.
Gemini scam defense. Google Messages is rolling out opt-in enhanced protection that uses cloud Gemini to assess the intentions of unrecognized senders, with encrypted processing in a secure space.
AI client interviews. McKinsey will have some entry-level candidates interact with an AI-simulated client during interviews; humans assess performance, not the AI.
Industry, Policy & Business
AI race reopens. Google and Meta unveiled new frontier models that challenge OpenAI and Anthropic, reversing the perception that the race had narrowed.
OpenAI model timeline. OpenAI reportedly plans one or two model releases this year, but its next flagship still needs alignment work and government safety review.
OpenAI lawsuits kids. Eight US states sued OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT is unsafe for children and that the company misled consumers about safety, citing harms including degraded critical thinking.
Character.AI data. State AGs filed a notice in Character.AI's bankruptcy case to protect users' private chats from being sold, warning of risks given the large number of minors.
AI music controls. YouTube added labels for AI-generated songs, Deezer plans a filter to exclude AI tracks, and both platforms aim to increase transparency around generative music.
Nvidia Europe investment. Nvidia announced $2B in new European investments, stakes in French startups, and $250M in compute for UK AI safety labs.
